According to the report, the Senate would resume on Tuesday, January 29 for the special plenary. It quoted a source in the National Assembly as saying that lawmakers would resume to discuss the suspension of the CJN.
This is after the leadership of the National Assembly would have also held a meeting on Sunday, January 27 on the same matter. Recall that Legit.ng had reported that following series of poor attendances, the Nigerian Senate suspended its plenary until after next month’s presidential elections. The Senate according to the lawmakers, will resume on February 19. “Dear distinguished colleagues, in view of the fact that it is after 2pm., we cannot proceed any further so we have to adjourn accordingly. The senate hereby adjourns to Tuesday, the 19th day of February, 2019 at 10am. prompt,” Deputy senate president Ike Ekweremadu had said while announcing the adjournment.
However, it will now resume for a special plenary over Onnoghen’s suspension. Legit.ng had reported that President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, January 25, 2019, suspended the embattled CJN Walter Onnoghen and appointed Ibrahim Tanko Muhammed from Bauchi state in acting capacity.
President Buhari, in a statement released late Friday, said Onnoghen was suspended based on the order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).
