United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington has stated why the US is interested in issues challenging Nigeria’s democracy.
Symington on Monday said U.S is interested in democracy of Nigeria because “whatever happens to Nigeria affects the world.”
He, therefore, urged Nigerians to stand up and defend democracy, stressing that everything lies only in the hands of Nigerians.
This was disclosed in a statement shared by U.S. Embassy on its official Twitter handle.
The statement read: “Why does the United States support Nigeria’s democracy? Because what happens in Nigeria will affect the world and it depends on you. It depends on every Nigerian,” Stuart Symington.
DAILY POST had over the weekend reported that many Nigerians, as well as the United States, the European Union and the United Kingdom have condemned the suspension of CJN Onnoghen.
But the Federal Government in a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, on Saturday, warned against foreign interference into the nation’s affairs.
Shehu said such statements are capable of creating apprehension, distrust among citizens or undermining the transparency and acceptability of outcomes of the nation’s electoral process.
